Hi Nicholas, which train did u book? I am going to vietnam this coming september. and i am very worried after reading the bad reviews both about trains and busses. I still prefer to go by train. since we are just a 5ft3 couple trying to go on a budget trip adventures, we are very worried with all the scams and locals trying to tout foreigners. please help!

While all of the trains have a different names ... they are just different cars attached to the same train with an identical berths. From what I can tell, there are no differences and the price is very reasonable. I highly recommend Asian Tour Advisor and Ms. Huyen, who we used, to set it up for you, to drop you off at the train, find your car and then arrange transportation to Sapa from Lao Cai. While the train ride itself is fairly straightforward -- all trains leave Hanoi at night and arrive in Lao Cai in the morning -- the only problem is arriving in Lao Cai and not having transportation to Sapa, assuming that is your destination, as it is an hour drive. There are many drivers willing to take you on that trip from the train station, but from what I understand, this can be the problem in terms of price and thus I think it is a good idea to have that part of the trip pre-arranged.
