Part of the wall was destroyed during WW II. The plaques are for people who donated from around the world for the wall to be rebuilt. I believe that the donation was around 1500 US dollars.

Hi Jett, My response earlier today concerned the walls of Dubrovnik. Whoops! The walls around Rothenburg ob der Tauber are open at all hours. In fact, when I visited in June 2016, I woke up at dawn due to jet lag. I'm so glad I did because I had the walls all to myself and it was magical! Even though it will probably be cold in December, I imagine that the possibility of seeing fresh snow on the roofs and down in the valley will be worth braving the cold. Enjoy!
