Dating back to the year 1000, near the Tuscan Apennines, stands the historic Nipozzano Castle positioned in the heart of the prestigious Chianti Rufina. Once a defensive stronghold for Florence, Castello Nipozzano is one of the most celebrated and historic Chianti Rufina vineyards of the Frescobaldi family. According to popular belief Nipozzano means “without a well” – testimony to the area’s lack of water and ideal circumstances for the cultivation of grapevines. An ancestor of the family, invested in pioneering vine cultivation, introducing varieties still unknown in Tuscany, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and others. Explore this place rich in history and tradition and book your tour with us. The wine store is closed on Mondays.

I am a criminal law professor and lawyer who represents long-term prisoners in the United States. I have read with great interest about the Frescobaldi family's programs involving inmates in their wine- and olive-making production. Would there be any way to tour those facilities, including the prison on Gorgona, and perhaps talk with someone involved in those programs? I will be in Italy this summer from July 24 to August 3. Thank you so much for any help you can provide..

Amy, the Gorgona penitentiary is managed by the Italian state prison system and cannot be visited without long and complex procedures.Lamberto Frescobaldi a few years ago developed the idea of introducing wine making on the penitentiary island to give the long term inmates a chance to learn a trade that they can practice when released. We are happy to say that both the wine and the programme have delivered fantastic results! Thank you for your interest.Angelica Frescobaldi

Q:
Are kids allowed to take the wine tour with parents or is it for adults only?
A:
I concur with Greatlark's response. While we didn't see any kids as we toured, I'd recommend contacting the winery directly for the best answer.
