We went here on Tuesday and sadly it was closed. However the view from the outside are amazing. This is such a huge castle that you can imagine just how many people and how long it took to build. Full review by Thargon

Does this place ever open? I have travelled from the UK three times to look at it and each time it has been unexpectedly closed. It contrasts strongly with all the other Greek fortresses I have visited (over thirty this year) in being shut far more often than open!

I have read conflicting information about the entrance to the new fortress - some say it is near the Spilia Gate, some say along a cobbled path near to the old port, and some say near the modern market - please can someone confirm which is the correct or best way to enter this fortress? Many thanks, in anticipation!

Hello, it's near the old port and you can easily reach it from any street from the old town core, so basically they were all right ;) the entrance is near the Basilica with the big dark red top …

Hello, it's near the old port and you can easily reach it from any street from the old town core, so basically they were all right ;) the entrance is near the Basilica with the big dark red top-that can be your landmark since it's visible from anywhere: get to the Basilica and just follow the street leading you forward p.s. go in the morning if you want to climb to the very top :)
