The deer were awesome and super scenic area with many cheap activities! They WILL follow you around if you have 200 yen rice crackers, then they bite and drag you back. Fun but better for the older …Full review by Lance T

Rail to see the Nara deer and temples. The deer are a bit scruffy- nature. The temples and 15 m. high Buddha are, well, huge. The bonus for the trip are the pedestrian-only shopping streets adjacent …Full review by tedg690

There are push cart sellers at Nara Park selling biscuits for the deers. Each pack is about 8 pieces. Nara Park (huge!) itself does not require a ticket to visit, open to all. So, the sellers will be there as long as there are visitors to the park. Good weather etc. Usually the sellers are scattered all over the park, mostly where the concentration of deers are - at flat grounds. If you don’t see any sellers, go near the temple building, chances you’ll find these biscuit sellers.

I was there in September. I did not see any evidence that the park is ever closed. The deers roam all about even in the street.

I was never at the Park early enough to not have the shops open. Regardless of when you go the Park and its attractions are well beyond just the deer. The Buddha at the end of the park is amazing. The museum along the walk is well worth it. The deer are fun but they can be aggressive. One time we were there it was fall and there were vendors selling baked sweet potatoes. We were finished with the potato and I was holding on to the wrapping paper until we could find an appropriate place to dispose of it. We stopped to take a picture and a deer snuck up behind us and stole the paper. I actually have a picture if the crime. Plan plenty of time. If you go during a festival there will also be a lot of great street food. It is well worth it.

I pet the deer at Nara Park and also broke out in hives! Definitely an allergic reaction. Then hours later when I took a shower, there must have still been allergens on my skin and hair and must have gotten into my eyes, and they got really swollen. Definitely think twice before letting them! Not really worth a full day of an allergic reaction is you ask me. FYI I am from the US, and of European descent. Not sure if genetics plays a role in who is allergic.
Q:
Hi I am planning to go nara deer park on 2 Jan will the park be open and the shop selling the crackers for the deer ? thanks
A:
Park is always open it is a large open space & it is outside stalls selling the crackers, not sure if they are there then but assume they would be.
