Sassi dwellings go back to prehistoric times, some 7000 years ago, since the Neolithic Age. These caves are no longer inhabited.Full review by MargieD300

Your best option when visiting Matera is to have a tour guide. There are no apps as far as I know. €20 each is the going price currently.

A:
Walking around the oldest part can be quite a challenge as many of the steps are slippery. However, you can view a great deal of the old town from above so it’s still worthwhile going.

We are coming in to Matera in the morning from Taranto and only have the afternoon to explore.. But if we catch a taxi; what are we actually asking for?
