Established in 1894, Lowell Observatory is a leading astronomical and planetary science research institution, National Historical Landmark, and one of the most popular nighttime destinations in Arizona. Our astronomers and planetary scientists work to reveal our universe with advanced instruments, such as the 4.3-meter Lowell Discovery Telescope, the 5th-largest optical telescope in the continental US. State-of-the-art public telescopes provide incredible views of the cosmos, and our historical telescopes offer a look into our history of scientific progress. Admission includes constellation tours, exhibits, and access to our Giovale Open Deck Observatory. See why we are recognized as the world’s first International Dark Sky destination.

We went to the 2 and 3 pm tours and later to the 5:30 pm event where they brought out the telescopes. It was great. Mostly outside things and you walked. But paths were smooth. We saw Saturn with its… Full review by rick_b_dawson

If you can get a clear night with very little moon, you will have the best experience. But my last trip was cloudy with a big bright full moon and it was still a blast. Visit during the day so you ca… Full review by SenecaBob

How many hours would you say an average visit would be? I’m interested in the guided tours in addition to evening activities. Just sounds like a long day!
A:
3 to 4 hours is plenty of time to see most. Many people go at night to view the stars & planets.

Hi, me and a friend of mine will be traveling from page, AZ to flagstaff on Saturday night as we're planning to to the Grand Canyon Sunday morning. What can we do in flagstaff in one night?
A:
Lowell Observatory may be a good pick. On some nights (maybe ALL nights?) they have star gazing and related lectures. Check their site for info.
Q:
Can people in a wheel chair (that can not walk at all) get around and see stuff here ok?

Thanks for your question. There are paved walkways connecting most or all of the buildings. I don't remember if any of the buildings themselves can only be accessed by steps. You might call and ask. The lectures themselves seem to be given IN the buildings so you'd want to check building access. The museum/gift shop is easily accessible via paved surfaces from the parking lot and there were no steps in the museum/gift shop that I recall.
Q:
What does this cost?
A:
About 15$ for adults. The ticket is for the whole day. You can come back later in the dark to watch the night sky with the same ticket!
Q:
Do you think it's kid friendly?
A:
My kids were 10 and 3. 10 year old is totally into space so loved it. 3 year old liked it but had a hard time listening to the talks.
