What a fantastic and informative museum. A nice variety of exhibits, from reading to video. Locked storage for bags & coats on entrance. If in Riga it really is a must visit.Full review by stephandant

Are you able to exit and re-enter the museum within the same day? We are hoping to come for an hour or so in the morning, then have another engagement but would like to come back to the museum afterwards (again, within the same day, just a few hours later).

How can anyone in their right mind consider this important museum to the worst period in Latvia's history as terrible? My grandfather and many other Latvians were taken to Siberia and died there or were shot, as my grandfather was! This is one of those most important, informative venues in Riga! This is not a question but a statement of fact!

I have noted your comments; I'm not aware of anybody calling the museum terrible. I have not seen the permanent exhibition - just the temporary one at the former American Embassy. When it comes to architectural aspects ie the so called 'black sarcophagus' one may have different opinions - and many have. The building is not complete - it was planned with a white extension project on one end, which in my mind would have benefitted the whole structure. Unfortunately, it seems lack of funding has stopped that from being complete. So in essence, I agree entirely with you on all points; however, the building housing the museum, I still believe to be one of the less successful architectural achievements of Latvia.
