We take our dogs to Cauterets & Pont' D'Espagne regularly. They are medium-sized Elkhounds. When they are in the national park they have to be on leads and this is quite strictly enforced. Before you get into the national park there are places where you can picnic by the river on the edge or of the car park and the dogs love it there. There is a small ski lift that runs from the car park up to the main plateau at Port D'Espagne you can take the dogs in this ski lift, no problem as its enclosed. Also the river there is a lovely walk with mountains on either side. From this level there is an open chair lift that runs up to Lac De Gaube. You can't take dogs on this as its open and very high. However if you are feeling energetic there is a footpath all the way up to the lake which takes about 45 mins. The restaurant by the lake has a large terrace with seating and dogs are welcome as long as they are on leads. Outside the national park on the slopes above Cauterets we have let the dogs run freely with no problems. The small restaurant halfway up the mountain called 'la Ferme Basque' Welcomes dogs.
